Accelerating Sustainable Mobility | The Road to 2032

The aluminum industry released an ambitious Automotive Technology Roadmap, reflecting the industry’s unified goals for future technology and sustainability. This Roadmap outlines the next decade of product-specific technical activity to collaborate with automakers, respond to the evolving landscape of electrification, and advance sustainable aluminum production. In this webinar, technical experts from the Aluminum Association’s Transportation Group covered:

  • An overview of the Roadmap and industry product-specific technical activity
  • Advances in product-specific technical activity as the industry moves through transformational changes in manufacturing processes to deliver the engineering vehicle solutions that meet or surpass consumer expectations and sustainability priorities
  • New directions for optimizing automotive aluminum through a number of pathways, including: design and product innovation and increased sustainability and recyclability, with a focus on closed-loop recycling to lower energy and carbon footprint.

Introduction to Sustainability

This second webinar covered the automotive technology roadmap, introducing sustainability, the decarbonization of the North American aluminum industry, key data on metrics for life cycle analysis (LCA) calculations, and recycling of aluminum in the automotive market. In this installment, technical leaders from both the Association and the ATG discussed:

  • The Aluminum Association’s North American Decarbonization Roadmap and forthcoming iterations specific to the automotive market.
  • Metrics used for LCA calculations explaining the data and source to provide a foundational understanding of LCA.
  • Aluminum recycling, both closed loop systems and vehicle End-of Life (EOL) including the current state of EOL scrap, what improvements are needed and why, and a brief introduction to sortation and segregation technology.

Sortation Technology and Upcycling

Technical leaders from the Aluminum Association’s Transportation Group (ATG) examined End-Of-Life (EOL) vehicle recycling and provided more insight on the status of sortation technology and its significance in aluminum recycling. Key topics for discussion included:

  • An introduction into the market for scrap, the importance of recycling in the supply of high-quality aluminum alloy material, and a brief overview on the overall supply of aluminum both in North America and globally
  • The current landscape of recycling sortation and segregation technologies where recovered aluminum is “downcycled” into casting alloys, assessing the pros and cons of the various techniques
  • A view of anticipated future advancements that will enable enhanced sortation and facilitate “upcycling” of aluminum scrap back into the alloys that were originally produced
  • Novel molten metal processing methods as an alternative means of achieving the preferred upcycling of aluminum scrap into higher value metal
