2023 North American Light Vehicle Aluminum Content and Outlook

A new survey of automakers and Tier 1 suppliers confirms aluminum use in new electric vehicles will continue to grow through the end of the decade, largely fueled by demand for more sustainable transportation. The report indicates the demand for more sustainable transportation will help drive an increase in market share for aluminum content by nearly 100 net pounds per vehicle (PPV) from 2020 to 2030. The expected demand from leading vehicle manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers suggests an aluminum content surge in the electric vehicle market.
Consumer affinity toward larger vehicles continues, helping drive the need for mass reduction to improve safety and efficiency.
Aluminum’s benefits make it the favored material for EVs and as a result, automakers are continuing to incorporate aluminum content into hoods, door sills and rockers, body-in-white (BIW), crash management systems (CMS), battery housings, e-motors and drives in vehicle designs along with mega-casting adoption to help offset battery weight and increase range.
